Several theories have attempted to account for gravitation. Currently, Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity (1915) remains the most satisfactory. It considers gravitation as a manifestation of the curvature of space-time under the effect of the energy of the matter found there. Newton's law of gravitation, developed at the end of the 17th century, however, remains an excellent approximation in non-relativistic cases (low speeds compared to that of light and masses of the order of the solar mass or lower).
On a microscopic scale, gravity is the weakest of the four fundamental interactions of physics; it becomes dominant as the scale of magnitude increases. Along with the electromagnetic force, it is one of the two interactions to act beyond the dimension of the atomic nucleus. Furthermore, as it is always attractive, it dominates over the electromagnetic forces which prevail at shorter range, being sometimes attractive, sometimes repulsive.
